A Year of Turmoil & Change

Big Chill "55" Reunion is a special event commemorating the year 1968. It was an eventful year in many ways, both in the United States and around the world. From the Apollo 8 mission to the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, here are some of the most important events of the year:

Tet Offensive: 
 

Beginning on January 30, 1968, the North Vietnamese launched a series of surprise attacks against South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The Tet Offensive marked a turning point in the conflict and led to a shift in public opinion against the war.

Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

On April 4, 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. His death sparked widespread outrage and led to riots in numerous cities across the United States.

Paris Student Protests:

In May 1968, a series of student protests erupted in Paris, France. The demonstrations, initially sparked by university reforms, quickly escalated into a broader movement calling for social and political change. The protests had a significant impact on French society and inspired similar movements around the world.

Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy:

On June 5, 1968, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles, California. His death occurred just months after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., further heightening the sense of turmoil and unrest in the United States.

Apollo 8 Mission:

On December 21, 1968, the Apollo 8 mission became the first manned spacecraft to orbit the Moon. This historic mission laid the groundwork for subsequent lunar missions, ultimately leading to the first Moon landing in 1969.
